Kawartha Country Living

When we started out our Kawartha country living adventure we had no clue what we were getting ourselves into. Moving from Haarlem, a city just outside of Amsterdam, Holland into the country in the Kawarthas, was a totally different experience and lifestyle.

We were city slickers, living amoungst the farmers fields with no idea about anything to do with country living.

Kawartha Country Living
This is as close to farming
as we will ever get.
We broke down and bought
a pick-up truck.

Over time we have adjusted to country living. We love the freedom. No we are not farmers and we will never pretend to be.

We have grown to respect the farmers. They know what they are doing and have all the fun toys to do it with. We give them our hay and in return they hay our land. We think it is a great deal. Everyone wins. We all help and look out for one another as much as we can. Farmers are great neighbors to have.

If you are thinking of moving into the country of any area, not just the Kawarthas, there are a few things you need to consider before doing so.

Know what services you have

In the Kawarthas, especially the city of the Kawartha Lakes, we pay high taxes and we only get garbage pickup and the post.

Know about the water in your potential home

You will be living on a well and will have to supply your own water. (soon helpful tips will follow on what to look for with your water)

Know about your septic system

Yes, living in the country you have to take care of your own waste. The city won't do it for you.

Know if you can have internet access

Nothing worse than dial up. (more info to come)

Know your heating system

We are on a geothermal system and love it. We also also have 2 propane fireplaces in case the power goes off. Yes, that has happened with temperatures below 30°. (more to come)

Know what your property is zoned

Our realtor thought we were on residential property and we found out through the city that we were agriculture zoned. (tips will come about the advantages and dissadvantages of zoning)
